Description

This was a two platform station. The main station building was on the Edinburgh bound platform with a smaller building on the Peebles platform.

There was a goods line on the east side of the station, probably to allow mineral trains from Whitehill Colliery to pass the station when passenger trains were stopped.

The station was the junction for the Penicuik Railway and the Peebles Railway and the branch divided having crossed a level crossing at the south end of the station.

There was a small goods yard on the west side of the station at the north end, approached from the north. Further north was Dalhouse Sand Quarry on the east side of the line.

Hawthornden station signal box was at the north end of the northbound platform and south of the level crossing at the north end of the station. It became a gate box in 1933. The bypass line on the east side was altered to no longer be a bypass. It remained in place but gained the north end of the southbound platform by reversal. The box closed in 1955 and a ground frame installed.

The station closed in 1962 shortly after withdrawal of the Peebles service. The line south closed but the Pencuik Railway remained open to serve paper mills in Penicuik. The line was singled in 1964 and closed in 1967.

Platforms remain here, partly rebuilt for the walking route on the trackbed.

Rosewell was to the south and Hawthornden to the north, Hawthornden Castle being on the bank of the River North Esk.
