This timetable, commencing on the 29th of September, saw introduction of Virgin's new Cross Country pattern with 31 additional trains daily serving Scotland including an hourly East Coast service to Edinburgh with alternate trains continuing to Dundee. GNER recast its timetable to allow for the Dolphingstone speed restriction (due to mining subsidence). ScotRail starts to run Class 334s in passenger-carrying service on the North Clyde routes.

The meeting started on the evening of the 19th to discuss ScotRail matters and continued on the 20th. On the 19th a number of members of the public expressed their dis-satisfaction with services on the Glasgow to Ayr line which mostly refered to train capacity and difficulties during the introduction of the class 334s. On the 20th Railtrack announced re-signalling of the Forth Bridge to allow two trains on the bridge at the one time in the same direction and electrifcation of the 'Burma' road which runs from Shields Junction to Larkfield Junction.

ScotRail commented the timetable includes all passenger services in Scotland they do not receive any financial help from other Train Operating Companies operating in Scotland in producing the timetable.

Franchise renewal

In 3 to 4 years the ScotRail franchise will be due for renewal rather than extension. It is expected that the next franchise will run for 20 years, while franchises in England will run for 7.

Just after 10:00 today a train comprising two three-car class 334s ran from Glasgow Central to Gourock and back. This was the first public run of the class 334s.

I travelled on the train and here were my first impressions:

- The train ride was poor between Paisley St James and Bishopton in both directions. The train rocked from side to side.

- The automatic announcements became out of step with the actual stations on the return journey.

- The driver's announcements were virtually in-audible.

Hopefully these are temporary problems. Once ironed out these trains seem to be fast and comfortable. Seating may be at a premium at the rush hour.

Class 334 driver training started 27 November, and in December Alstom received certification for test-running to commence in multiple. On 20 December Adtranz agreed to undertake a modifications programme to improve the reliability of ScotRail Turbostars. The ScotRail Class 158 refurbishment programme is now nearing completion at Shields, and Class 150/2s are emerging in the new ScotRail livery. The new station building at Largs came into use in mid-December.
