An Edinburgh train passenger has told of their frustrating journey from London after their train was cancelled at Preston. What is meant to be four hour journey, turned into an 11-hour mission.

A major refurbishment of the roof of Preston railway station is planned after decorative cast iron adornments plunged onto the platforms and track below.

Ahead of the overhaul a date for which has not been revealed Network Rail has applied for permission to undertake so-called trial removals of a selection of features from the Grade II-listed structure. The aim is to get a better understanding of the work that will be involved when the entire roof is given a much-needed revamp.

West Coast Main Line passengers are being urged to plan their journeys ahead of four weekends of essential railway improvements at Preston station. The complexity of upgrading switches and crossings means the railway will need to close completely between Wigan North Western and Lancaster.

Work on creating a new tram network in Preston continues. The city should be joining Manchester, Blackpool and Birmingham in having its own system.

Earlier this year, Preston Trampower acquired Station House in Gamull Lane, to use as a headquarters. Appropriately, the building was once the station masters house on the Preston to Longridge railway.

Platforms have been demolished and tracks removed in the first week of work to upgrade the Blackpool to Preston railway line. The platforms at Blackpool North station have been removed to make way for an improved layout. Five signal boxes have been decommissioned and work has started on building a new platform at Kirkham and Wesham station. And, despite complaints of late-running replacement bus services, rail bosses claim the eventual improvements due to the 19-week project will make the pain worthwhile.

Network Rail and its contractors have begun the main construction phase of a scheme to electrify the Preston and Blackpool line.
Track lowering works started at Poulton at the end of February. Once this is completed at the end of May, work will begin on the installation of over 200km of overhead catenary.
The upgrade is part of the £1 billion Great North Rail Project.
