The route between Rutherglen and Exhibition Centre has re-opened following a 32m improvement project. The structural elements alone, including work at Anderston tunnel, saw engineers complete over 47,000 hours of work. The slab track work was made up of 19 separate sites, ten of which were to replace damaged sections of the top slab ranging from two to eight metres in length. This work extends the life of the existing slab and also reduces the risk of temporary speed restrictions being imposed. Principal contractors involved in delivery for the work include AMCO-Giffen, Story and Bam Nuttall.

Network Rail is trialling technology that will allow digital sensors to spot track faults, cut rail disruption and improve safety on Scotland's network. Hitachi Rail and its subsidiary Perpetuum have been awarded a contract by Network Rail to develop the first real-time digital solution that monitors, and eventually predicts, sections of track that affect ride quality and require maintenance.

The closure of the railway will affect people planning to travel on the Ayr-Glasgow, Ardrossan-Glasgow and Largs-Glasgow routes.
