Commuters between Portishead and Bristol are a step closer to benefitting from a new rail link as the project to restore the disused railway through North Somerset reaches a new milestone.

The Department for Transport has granted planning consent for reinstatement of the railway between Portishead and Pill. This is the first passenger reopening to be approved using a Development Consent Order, which includes planning and environmental consent and compulsory land acquisition.

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has confirmed that the cost of the project has risen to £152M, meaning an additional £25.5M is needed.
