Deviations

To the immediate east of Shawfair is the course of the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway. This was replaced, due to its having several tight bends, by a new alignment further east for the opening of the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway (North British Railway), itself given up and not used for the opening of the Borders Railway due to the construction of the Edinburgh City Bypass on a long oblique over the trackbed.
