Appeal to extend Edinburgh CrossRail to Shawfair

Date: 16/09/2003

Sir Tom Farmer is to appeal to the Scottish Executive over Midlothian Council's refusing planning permission for an extension of the Edinburgh CrossRail route from Newcraighall to Shawfair. Shawfair station would be located by the former Monktonhall Colliery a site which is earmarked for developments including Carnie Business Park and many new homes. The currently proposed route for re-opening the Waverley Route runs further west and does not follow the original route of the line. The original route has been crossed by the Edinburgh Bypass on the level and would require a considerable bridge to be built over the line if reinstated as the routes meet at an oblique angle by the Sherrifhall roundabout.
