Name and dates

Dalry Loops (1905-)

Opened on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway.

Description

There are loops on either side of the railway running north from near Dalry station (Swinlees Junction) to the former Brownhill Junction. The loops are electrified and may be used by passenger trains.

The line was quadrupled from Brownhill Junction to Dalry Junction when the Kilbarchan Loop (Glasgow and South Western Railway) opened, effectively quadrupling the line between Glasgow St Enoch and Dalry Junction.

After closure of the Kilbarchan route (1972) and Kilmarnock route (1973) the loops were retained, running from south of Swinlees Junction to Dalry Junction the line reverted to two tracks.

A branch from Swinlees Junction serves the Dalry Chemical Works. Mines were formerly served from this junction for which see the Swinlees Junction entry.
