Only ten seconds and a good dose of luck prevented a 70mph head-on crash between a Loram rail-grinding machine and a nine-car Class 222 Meridian.

Four Hull Trains class 170/3s arrived at Haymarket shed last weekend after being displaced from the Hull - Kings Cross services following arrival of the class 222 Pioneers.

It is planned to eventually deploy the new arrivals on North Berwick services where locomotive hauled stock is currently in use.

Haymarket MPD: 40052 inside Haymarket Depot in 1983. Before the year was over the loco had been withdrawn and cut up at Crewe Works.
