Name and dates

Shore Road Signal Box (1900-1964)

Opened on the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway.

Description

This signal box opened in 1900 during a resignalling which altered the north part of Stirling and Stirling East stations and their approaches. It was to the south of Stirling Forth Viaduct [SandD] and on the west side of the line.

Prior to the resignalling there had been a level crossing to the north of the two parallel stations and no connection between the systems except south of the stations at Stirling Middle Junction. Ultimately it would lead to the merger of the stations, officially in 1968.

The process began with the lifting of Shore Road up onto a bridge as Seaforth Place, dispensing with the two level crossings.

The Caledonian Railway's Shore Road Level Crossing [CR] signal box and the North British Railway's Shore Road Level Crossing [NB] signal box were replaced by a new single signal box, Stirling North, at the north end of the station on the west side. The track layout was altered to allow trains from the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway to the west to briefly join the Caledonian route before crossing over to the North British lines.

The Shore Road Goods box was to the north of the level crossing box. It controlled access to the goods yard and into Stirling East station from the north. It was replaced with Shore Road Signal Box in 1900. The older box had been just to the south of the new box.

The box controlled access to Shore Road Shed [NB] and Shore Road Goods which were to the south and approached from the north. Both were north of the station and Shore Road. These were approached by a single line with a short head shunt on the east side of the line, terminating by the viaduct. Finally there was a small group of sidings north of the viaduct, on the west side of the line and accessed from the south.

Entry into the station was controlled from the north box.

Between 1906-7 there was a temporary Shore Road North box to the north of the viaduct.

The main station building, at the Caledonian side, was replaced in 1912.

Shore Road box closed in 1964 along wit the goods yard and shed.

There is no junction or box here today but the railway to Alloa has re-opened to passengers and it continues beyond to Dunfermline Lower via Kincardine.
