Rothiemay

Location type

Station

Name and dates

Rothiemay (1856-1968)

Station code: National Rail
Opened on the Great North of Scotland Railway.

Description

This was a two platform station on a double track line. There was a goods yard on the north side, approached by reversal from the east.

The station was originally much smaller, with two short platforms, and located on a single track line. The goods yard was looped from the west to the east side of the station and on the north side.

Two signal boxes opened in 1890 at either end of a loop. The north box was at the north west end and south box at the south east end of the Keith bound platform. The south box also controlled access to the goods yard.

The railway between Rothiemay and Keith was doubled in 1898. The north box was no longer necessary and closed. The south box remained open.

To the east is the Deveron Viaduct. The original viaduct was single track and was replaced by the current viaduct, capable of carrying two tracks, to its south.

The railway east to Avochie Signal Box was doubled in 1900 - completing the double track between Aberdeen and Keith.

The Rothiemay signal box closed in 1960.

The line is now single track, the line being singled between Huntly and Keith in 1970, and the former station building on the eastbound platform is now a house.
