Avochie Signal Box (1898-1900)

Opened on the Great North of Scotland Railway.

Description

This temporary signal box controlled the east end of Deveron Viaduct. When the line was doubled, the single track viaduct required replacement. In the interim this box controlled the east end of the short single track section over the old bridge.

The line east to Huntly was doubled in 1898.

A new double track bridge was built to the immediate south of the old bridge, the new one carrying two tracks. The old bridge survived for some time, out of use.

The line west to Rothiemay was doubled in 1900. This completed the doubling of the railway between Aberdeen and Keith.

The line was reduced to a single track in 1970 between Keith and Huntly.
