Nethybridge Timber Extraction Railway

Introduction

This standard gauge wartime timber extraction railway, known as the 'Puggy Line', largely ran south from Nethybridge station by the Duack Burn to a sawmill. In addition there were 3ft lines, the route of which were altered as required to assist with forestry operations. It was operated in the Great War, roughly from 1917 to 1924. A new timber siding was laid in at Nethbridge in 1917, taken out in 1920. Forestry operations were carried out by the Canadian Forestry Corps. Much of the former line is now a footpath. Similar lines existed elsewhere, such as those at Aviemore, Knockando, Kemnay and Carrbridge.
