Cromer High: A century ago, this desolate scene was Cromer (High) station, a major terminus and the destination of prestigious non-stop expresses from London Liverpool Street. Pictured here in May 1976, the poorly-sited station eventually closed to passengers in 1954 and to all traffic in 1960. The view today is of housing.

Wemyss Bay: Wemyss Bay station on 12th May 1985, with a Class 303 unit in Strathclyde PTE livery awaiting its return to Glasgow Central . The poster proclaims that “Red Star goes like there’s no tomorrow”. This boast was inevitably a hostage to eventual fortune because by 2001 the Red Star parcels service was gone and had no tomorrow. Class 303 units (formerly the “Blue” trains), ran out of tomorrows a year later in 2002.

Wanton Walls Junction: Among the confusion of lines crossing this area was a freight-only route from Niddrie West Junction to the ECML facing east, joining it beyond the current Musselburgh station. It ran side-by-side with other lines for most of it's length, being unaccompanied only through the village of Newcraighall. The trackbed of that section is pictured here, looking south east over Newcraighall Road in May 1995 towards Wanton Walls Junction, where it was joined by the Lothian Lines branch from Niddrie North. The line was superseded in the 1960s by a less direct route through the new Millerhill Yard to Monktonhall Junction.

Beattock Bank Ballast Quarry: Extract of OS map showing 'Old Quarry', a side cutting, adjacent to Beattock Bank rockfill embankment on the Caledonian Railway mainline between Greskine and Harthope. A side-cutting was an excavation of the ground beside the route of a railway where extra material was wrought to create an embankment when insufficient material could economically be brought from the nearest cutting excavation. This quarry most likely also supplied the earlies ballast for the permanent way in which case it needed to be broken down into smaller pieces by hand using sledgehammers. Added by Charlie Niven.
