Leith Central: Following its relatively short stint as a passenger terminus (1903 - 1952), Leith Central was subsequently adapted for use as a diesel depot and given the shed code 64H. Part of the converted depot is shown here in 1971 looking out from the former station concourse, with Barclay 0-4-0DM D2435 nearest the camera. Leith Central diesel depot was officially closed in 1972, following which the old building lay derelict for many years. During that period it became something of a haven for drug addicts (and the inspiration for the Irvine Welsh novel Trainspotting). Final demolition and clearance took place in 1989 and the site is now occupied by a supermarket, a swimming pool and associated car parking, although the old station frontage is still a notable landmark at the Foot of the Walk see image [[11184]].

La gare du Sud à Nice: View of the train shed of the abandoned Gare du Sud in Nice in April 2007. The station served the Chemin de fer de la Provence (CFP) until 1991. After the failure of one redevelopment project it is currently planned to turn the remains of the station into a media library and sports complex, using the overall roof to mount some 2000 solar panels. The CFP currently occupies an uninspiring much smaller modern station (Nice CP) behind the photographer but still operates the route to Digne.

This line will soon have a new concrete surface, so it can be converted to a guided busway, linking up with the section heading towards Huntingdon via city centre street running. As rail enthusiasts, we may not like busways; but at least the trackbed will be used.

Glasgow Green: The shored-up facade of Glasgow Green station photographed on 13 April 2011.  The station, which closed in 1953, was in a gap between tunnels so the white-tiled remains at platform level can easily be seen from a passing train on the Argyle Line today.  Glasgow Green is now served by Bridgeton station less than half a mile upline.  The rather understated building in the background here is the former Templeton's carpet factory. Bridgeton [2nd]: Bridgeton Central was only so known for 11 years - and not it's last 11 years - but the name is unambiguous so let's use it. With a bookies having moved out, the latest occupant of what was the ticket office and waiting room in April 2011 is 'Bridgeton Express' with a fine bold fascia board. The choice of name is surely a nod to the building's former use, though whether it ever saw an express in its life is open to doubt.

Clapham North: Exterior of Clapham North station, LUL Northern Line, on 13th April 2013. It was opened by the City & South London Railway on 3rd June 1900 as Clapham Road and was renamed Clapham North on 13th September 1926 when the line was extended from Clapham Common to its ultimate southern terminus at Morden. The line then became known as the Morden-Edgware Line until renamed Northern Line in 1937, notwithstanding that it has this lengthy section in south London! This station is one of only two surviving with a narrow island platform in a single tunnel, the other being Clapham Common, one stop south. The others, also on the Northern Line, at Euston (Bank branch) disappeared during the construction of the Victoria Line in the 1960s while that at Angel was completely rebuilt in 1992 which saw the replacement of the lifts with escalators and the closure of the original 1901 entrance on City Road, replaced by a modern and much more spacious ticket hall on Islington High Street.

Buffer stops for the about-to-be-extended platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be installed behind site hoardings relocated 5m further forward. Beneath the child's feet the trackbed has already been excavated and infilled with polystyrene blocks. This area is due to be uncovered again in June.

Gogar: A Milngavie service passes the site of Gogar station on the E&G on 13 April 2019. Apart from the immediate surroundings this location, cut off from Edinburgh proper by the city bypass, is quite rural. Not much has changed since 1930 when the station closed, though the hamlet of Gogar itself, a full mile away on the Glasgow road, is no more. Its site is occupied by the Gogarburn tram stop. The deconsecrated church survives though; it is occupied by a cabinetmaker which is quite appropriate when you think about it.

Bamber Bridge: The second railtour on 13 April 2019 to head between the WCML at Farington Jct and Blackburn was 'The Border Raider'from Birmingham to Carlisle. This was hauled from Crewe by A1 pacific no. 60163 'Tornado'. Having been held at Lostock Hall Jct by service trains, the driver was making every effort to regain time as it passed Bamber Bridge.

Saughton Junction: Saughton was still quite rural when the station closed in 1920/21. This road linking the station to Saughton was bypassed when the area was developed and is just about identifiable as the country lane it once was. The carriage entrance to the goods station can be seen in this view looking east on 13 April 2019.

Blackpool North: Having already seen three other tours on 13 April 2019, tour number four was captured at Blackpool North. This had arrived from Euston hauled by 86259, possibly a first for the Class on a working to the town. Ex LMS Jubilee 45690 'Leander' is seen on the country end waiting to haul the tour to Hellifield via Blackburn and then back to Preston via Carnforth.

Pitlochry: Now decommissioned, the old signal box from Pitlochry still looks to be structurally sound in April 2019 but is very much separated from the railway it served by the new extended Down side platform. SJP on the colour light signal presumably stands for 'Stanley Junction Panel'.

Pitlochry: Looking south from Platform 2 at Pitlochry on 13th April 2019. Dismantling of the old Platform 1 extension was well advanced and these remains disappeared the following day. Pitlochry: Resignalling at Pitlochry has created two bidirectional platforms, although the former Up Platform is now used by all trains that aren't crossing another service here. Windsor and Eton Central: Full-scale replica of Achilles 4-2-2 No.3041, on static display at Windsor & Eton Central, on 13th April 2019. The original was built in 1894 and at first named 'Emlyn', after Lord Emlyn, Chairman of the GWR. Repainted in GWR livery in 1897, the Diamond Jubilee year, the locomotive was then renamed 'The Queen', especially to pull six new carriages of Queen Victoria's Royal Train. It was withdrawn from service in 1912 and the genuine example does not survive.

Haymarket Goods: The loading platform of the former goods station at Haymarket survives which I find rather surprising; offices seem to have been built round it even though it is not a good use of the space. I suppose it serves as a nature reserve of sorts. The evil-looking building on the right is an HMRC office. Haymarket: Staff only? While emergency timetables operate and trains run nearly empty there is not a customer to be seen on the concourse at Haymarket. Edinburgh Princes Street: Apart from the very obvious cast-iron portico in Rutland Street, remains of Princes Street station are scant indeed. Chester-le-Street: There is a reason for the absence of trains and the blurred figure in orange: a young man had decided to walk off the end of the Chester-le-Street Up platform (shown) and head towards London. You often hear about such incidents, but rarely witness them. A combination of rail staff and police persuaded the man to return to a safe place; and to the railway's credit, train movements were back to normal in 40 minutes - just as it was going dark!

The team offered the “apparent best value” based on price and technical proposals, officials said.
2013Last Scottish railman from the steam age retires [Scotsman]THE last train driver in Scotland to have started his career in the steam age has stepped down from his cab for the final time – after 46 years and hundreds of thousands of miles. Joining as a locomotive cleaner in 1967, he worked as a fireman on steam engines before driving diesel and electric trains, from the Glasgow-London Royal Scot to Royal Mail trains immortalised by the 1936 film Night Mail. Mr Porter drove his last train on Wednesday when he arrived at Glasgow Central station one minute early with the 8:30am from London Euston, which he had driven from Preston. [From David Scott]

Wensleydale Railway is comparing the job to restoring the line at Dawlish, near Devon, washed away in this year^s storms, which hit the headlines when it was repaired in record time by more than 300 network rail staff and contractors. The £100,000 job on the Wensleydale Railway has taken less than four months after a landslip at Akebar, between Bedale and Leyburn, effectively cut the 16 mile railway in half and caused the suspension of services from Christmas 2013.
