The project has reached a major milestone with the formal acquisition of the former Nant Helen opencast.

The Nant Helen surface mine site will include an electrified high-speed outer rail testing track (6.9km) with testing speeds of up to 110mph (177kmh) and an electrified low-speed infrastructure testing track (4.5km) allowing speeds of up to 40mph (64kmh).

It will also include a dual platform station environment and 25kv overhead line equipment (OLE) infrastructure.

Onllwyn Washery: Traction changes but the South Wales long association with coal continues. A gritty scene at the Onllwyn coal washery. At least rail served even if the coal comes in by truck from opencast.

Onllwyn: Onllwyn looking south-west to Neath. The poor old station is in the foreground and the truck is bringing coal to the washery.
