Description

This Second World War ammunition depot was spread out longitudinally on either side of the line between Macbie Hill station and Leadburn on the former Leadburn, Linton and Dolphinton Railway. It consisted of a series of of over 100 spaced out storage huts.

South of Leadburn station the depot started in the 'V' of the junction between the LL&DR and the Peebles Railway, a series of over 60 huts on the south side of the line (and around 10 on the north side at Mitchell Hill) as far as Lamancha (where about 4 more huts were on the north side). Beyond Lamancha a line of about 13 huts were on the south side of the line north of Lamancha House with a larger group of around 21 to the north side of the line. The final group of about 23 huts were on the south side of the line at Macbie Hill, this group known as RNAD Macbie Hill.

When the depot opened the former Leadburn, Linton and Dolphinton Railway was closed (since 1933). Some relaying may have been required. Officially it reopened from Leadburn to Macbie Hill although possibly track was relaid as far as Dolphinton [CR] giving two access points. The Dolphinton Branch (Caledonian Railway) closed in 1950. The signal box at Leadburn was replaced in 1954. Finally the line between Leadburn (excluded) and Macbie Hill closed in 1960/61 and the Peebles Railway closed in 1962.
