Location type

Junction

Name and dates

North Rosehall Junction

Opened on the Glasgow, Bothwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge Railway.

Description

At this junction a line west to Rosehall Colliery met the line south to Bothwell Junction before running north to Whifflet Central Junction.

The Rosehall spur running off to the west connected to the old Rosehall Railway which had opened in connection with the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway. This line had run south from the south end of Whifflat station and through a tunnel under Rosehall to reach the Rosehall Colliery. A replacement route was opened which avoided the level crossing with the Glasgow, Garnkirk and Coatbridge Railway.

The main line was double track and the branch, which was single, doubled before the junction. In addition there were loops on the west side of the junction. Access to Rosehall was from the north. The signal box was on the east side of the line north of the junction.

To the north was Carnbroe Signal Box and to the south Rosehall South Junction. There were further connections to the Rosehall Colliery and Rosehall Railwayfrom these boxes.

In 1940 the Rosehall Colliery Glen Pit opened to the north, on the west side of the line and approached from the junction.

The signal box closed in 1943. The lasted until 1954/1955. Acess to the Rosehall Colliery Glen Pit closed in 1954.
