Station

Name and dates

Merchiston (1882-1965)

Opened on the Caledonian Railway.

Description

This was a two platform station in the south western suburb of Edinburgh on the approach to Edinburgh Princes Street station.

There were station buildings on each platform. The larger building was on the south west bound platform. Both buildings had glazed canopies. A footbridge crossed between the platforms on the Edinburgh site of the buildings. A signal box was added in 1898 on the south west bound platform at the Edinburgh side of the footbridge.

There was no goods yard, however nearby there were sidings for the Edinburgh and Dumfriesshire Dairy later installed closer to Edinburgh.

To the south west was Slateford Junction [1st].

The signal box closed in 1960, control being taken over by the box at Dalry Junction.

With the closure of Edinburgh Princes Street and its approach in 1965, Merchiston closed and trains were diverted onto the approach to Haymarket station.

The platforms remain and the trackbed is now the approach road for Slateford Yard.
