Description

This shed was located to the south of the station. The stone built shed was a roundhouse, entry to the roundhouse being through a triumphal archway (with the watertank concealed above). It was a 34 road shed. The shed opened in 1863 with the opening of the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway which opened a new route to the south, not via Aberdeen but via Forres [2nd] and Aviemore.

The shed was extended in 1875. The shed had previously formed a semi-circle, this extended the roundhouse into a three quarters circle.

In 1935 the London, Midland and Scottish Railway erected a coaling plant over the southern of the approach sidings to the turntable (these sidings served the former coaling bench). An ash disposal point opened alongside, to the west.

The shed was closed and demolished in 1962, there being a drive to reduce steam haulage in the Highlands due to the high costs of hauling coal to depots. Locomotives were then based at the Lochgorm Works.

After closure the site became a market stance. The site is now a carpark for a supermarket.

British Railways assigned the shed code 60A and Dingwall Shed, Fortrose Shed and Kyle Shed were sub-sheds.

The original carriage shed was located to the south of the shed, the site later becoming the first market stance.

During redevelopment of the former shed site, in the late 1970s, a tender was found buried on site. It was taken to Aviemore Shed, on the Strathspey Railway [Preserved], but was found to be beyond repair.
