Inchbelly Level Crossing

Location type

Name and dates

Inchbelly Level Crossing (1919-1961)

Opened on the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway.

Description

This gate box was at the Inchbelly Level Crossing in Glasgow, on the former 1831 Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway east of the original Glasgow terminus.

The box was just west of St Rollox Works and the bridge over Castle Street / Springburn Road. Despite the replacement of the level crossing with a bridge, and the relocated of the road to the immediate east into a cutting, the original road crossing remained open. A gate box was provided from 1919.

To the west lines fanned out to St Rollox Goods West with the original approach to Glebe Street to their south. Just to the east was Castle Street Coal Depot
The box closed in 1961, the lines westwards being abandoned in 1968.

This site was obliterated by conversion of the road to a dual carriageway.
