Bellgrove Tunnel (1870-)

Opened on the Glasgow and Coatbridge Branch (North British Railway).

Description

This quadruple track tunnel is 220 yards long. Only two tracks presently run through it from High Street Junction to Bellgrove station.

It was originally a two track tunnel until an extra two tracks were added on the north side. The northern tracks, through the Bellgrove Independent Tunnel, were goods and minerals only.

The tunnel passes directly under the Bellgrove Cattle Market which was served by sidings and cattle pens on the south side of Bellgrove station and served from the east.
