Whittingham Hospital

Gradwell was a Sentinel geared steam locomotive that was used on the Whittingham Hospital Railway in its final years, and in fact for the last year of operation was the sole motive power. It was purchased second hand from Bolton Gas Works and was sold back into industry after the line closed. In addition to coal trains, passengers (hospital staff and visitors) were carried on the two mile line to and from the hospital in converted goods vans. These services were free of charge and initially connected with Longridge branch trains at Grimsargh but from 1930 until closure in 1957 met buses at the same location.
