Neilson, Reid & Co

Introduction

This company was formed in 1836 to build stationary engines, soon being located at the Hyde Park Works [1st] in Finnieston, Glasgow. Notable engines include the beam engine for the Cowlairs Incline.

In 1844 the company built locomotives for the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway and shortly afterwards began to concentrate on locomotive design and construction.

In 1855 the company became Neilson & Co.

In 1861/2 the company relocated to the Hyde Park Works [2nd] in Sptringburn.

The company became Neilson, Reid & Co in 1898.

Merging with two other companies a new company, ^the combine^, was created, the North British Locomotive Company in 1903.
