Muirtown Basin Branch (Highland Railway)

Introduction

This single track branch was built by the Highland Railway. Access was from the Inverness direction from the former Inverness and Ross-shire Railway and the line ran west and then south to run parallel with the Muirtown Basin of the Caledonian Canal where it also served the Glen-Albyn Distillery. A mines depot (South Kessock Mines Depot (London, Midland and Scottish or War Department)) was added in the Great War, close to the junction with the main line.

Locations along the line

This junction was east of the Clachnaharry Swing Bridge and west of the Ness Viaduct. It was the start of the short branch south to Muirtown Basin. Both the main line and branch were single track. A signal box was present from opening in 1877. This was replaced with a ground frame before closure. Closure was either in 1969 or 1970.

Both quaysides were on the east side of the canal, just north of the Muirtown swing bridge (a road bridge). The distillery was to the east.
