Ayr Harbour South: Scene on the south side of Ayr harbour in September 1955 with TS Duchess of Hamilton berthed in her usual place. Built for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company by Harland and Wolff at Govan, she was the regular Ayr steamer and had been fitted with a bow rudder (the wheel is just visible on the foredeck) to assist movements at Ayr, which was difficult to enter under certain conditions. The railway sidings here were reached from the goods station located to the north of the harbour via a now-dismantled bridge, the piers of which still stand in the river. See image [[45697]]

Kingston Dock: Puffer 'S S Glenaray' berthed in Kingston Dock in 1958, alongside the swing bridge that carried a road across the entrance. This boat was built by R. Dunston at Thorne in 1944 as 'VIC 89'. She was sold by the Ministry to Hamilton & McPhail in 1947 becoming the 'Glenaray'. In 1956 she laid the inshore cable of the first Trans-Atlantic voice cable in the Sound of Kerrera as the main cable laying ship was too large for those waters. She was scrapped in 1964. The quaysides of the Kingston Dock were not rail served, except for a short portion by this crane reached by one of the General Terminus sidings. Photo by G H Robin.

Zwettl: One of the last steam strongholds in Austria was Schwarzenau, a sub-shed of Gmünd in the north east of the country, which employed lightweight 2-8-2Ts of class 93.13 on branches off the Vienna to Prague main line. Here No. 93.1414 is seen soon after departing from Zwettl, some 22km south of Schwarzenau, on 9 September 1975 with the early afternoon train to Martinsberg-Gutenbrunn.

Bernschlag: Not yet 7am on a September morning in 1975 as OeBB 2-8-2T No. 93 1418, hotly pursued by a track workers' trolley, steams through the woods at Bernschlag in north-east Austria with the 06:49 short working from Schwarzenau to Zwettl, on the long, straggling branch southwards to Martinsberg-Gutenbrunn. Schwarzenau was once an important junction station on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn from Vienna to Eger (now Cheb), a main line whose importance was diminished following the dissolution of the Austrian Empire, and particularly after WW2 with the Iron Curtain running through the town of Gmuend, which then effectively became the terminus, barring a meagre cross border service.

Schwarzenau: Any efficiency gains from the fitting of a Giesl ejector are not obvious as lightweight 2-8-2T No. 93.1322 makes a smoky start out of Schwarzenau along the single track line from Vienna with the 14.10 departure to Gmünd in September 1975.

Less well known is this low bridge carrying the main line over Stubbins Lane, a little further north, but which also has four badger emblems on each side.

Leicester West Bridge [2nd]: This station opened in 1832 and closed in 1928. It seems the platform edging survived, and in recent times (anyone know the date?) a track panel and signal were placed here to give some idea of how things used to be. Unfortunately, it's become a bit overgrown. Maybe I should hire a chainsaw. See image [[40312 taken lass than a mile away towards Swannington]]

Marylebone: The stuff of dreams. Back in the 1980's, when misguided folk wanted to turn Marylebone into a coach terminus, what odds would you have given on seeing a choice of loco-hauled trains there in 2012? Trains for Banbury (L) and Kidderminster (R) await departure on 9th September. I chose the latter train over staying in the City for a lecture on quality of patents - good call!

Pringle Wharf: A forgotten main line perhaps? Hardly. These robust piers carried sidings from the Leicester and Swannington Railway over the River Soar towards the Great Central (the white semi-circles in the right background are arches under Central station). The sidings actually passed under the GC, but stopped short of the Midland. This view in September 2012 seems to have been opened up by demolition - I remember a splendid Victorian building on the far side of the river, with external plumbing - a prototype for the Pompidou Centre in Paris, perhaps.

Fort William [1st]: Looking towards the site of the original Fort William station, closed and demolished in 1975 to make way for the A82 road to act as a diversion for the High Street, which was then pedestrianised. It was replaced by a new station 700 yards to the north which has no architectural merit whatsoever.

2012Portillo cuts ribbon on station^s revamped loo [Northern Times]Given his surname, Michael Portillo surely knew he was opening himself up to a few jibes when he agreed to officially open a new loo in Sutherland. But the former politician turned television presenter proved to be a good sport as he gamely took on the task during a visit to the private Dunrobin Station on Monday afternoon. Cheered and clapped by a smattering of enthusiastic onlookers, and with the cameras rolling, he clutched an oversized pair of scissors and cut, with a flourish, a length of pink ribbon stretched across the loo door. And not a joke about portaloos was to be heard. [From Richard Buckby]

2015Railscot Images - Editorial ItemThe launch of the Borders Railway has, as I^m sure everyone can imagine, resulted in a flood of submissions to Railscot. While less than 50% of these photographs will be used on the website they are all appreciated nonetheless. One issue which has been highlighted of late however is the increasingly large number of submissions now received which are often referred to as ^family and friends^, ^pseudo-selfies^ or ^self-publicity^ images, where, in some cases, the railway-related subject matter can appear almost incidental. If you are one of the various contributors who has submitted such an item recently please do not take it personally if this material is not used on the Railscot website. Thank you for your understanding. Editor
2016London to Manchester in 18 minutes? All aboard the new speed-of-sound train [Telegraph]The British government has expressed an interest in Hyperloop, a new travel technology that could reach the speed of sound – and reduce the commute time from Manchester to London to just 18 minutes. Hyperloop, which is currently being developed in the US, will use magnetic train-like pods to shuttle passengers and freight in a vacuum network of tubes, above or below ground. Early tests indicate maximum speeds of 1,220 km/h, although the idea – which was conceived by Tesla billionaire and head of SpaceX, Elon Musk – is still at concept stage. [From Mark Bartlett]
2016Minister orders improvements to fix Borders Railway^s ^unacceptable^ performance [Scotsman]An improvement plan to address the Borders Railway^s ^unacceptable^ performance has been ordered by transport minister Humza Yousaf, it was revealed today. The move came as the first-year passenger journey total for the Edinburgh-Tweedbank route was expected to top 1.4 million - around 20 per cent above target. ScotRail Alliance managing director Phil Verster and transport minister Humza Yousaf cut a cake to celebrate Borders Railway^s first birthday Mr Yousaf told The Scotsman said: ^Performance on this line in my view has not been acceptable. ^I am pleased the ScotRail Alliance has put together an improvement plan. ^I will push them to do that as quickly as possible, and expect reliability to be significantly improved.^ Scotland on Sunday revealed last month that train performance on the £350 million railway hit a new low at the beginning of August. ScotRail figures showed only about one in four trains - 28.4 per cent - arrived on time. Campaigners said their figures showed the situation was even worse and said the ^shocking^ number of delays and cancellations had reached ^epidemic^ proportions.

Beginning in London, the train would take travellers through the heart of Russia before concluding in Wakkanai, Japan.
2018End of the line for ^awful^ Pacer trains [Bolton News]Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, has promised that the awful pacers will be scrapped by next year and replaced with new electrical services. Pacers were first introduced by British Rail between 1980 and 1987 as the answer to a shortage of trains, made using the same parts as buses, which is why the trains have a similar seating format to an older bus. They were originally intended as a short-term solution only to be used on smaller rural lines.
2018How Alan Pegler saved Flying Scotsman for the nation [BBC News]Just over half a century ago, the world^s best-loved steam engine was destined for scrap. That it was saved was down to the efforts of one man - a true British eccentric. But his love for the locomotive he called the ^old girl^ cost him his fortune - and nearly saw Flying Scotsman stranded in the United States.
