Rainford Junction: 142057 for Kirkby entering the single line section west of Rainford Junction station on 10 February 2010. For the scene as it was thirty years earlier see image [[21273]]. Apart from the undergrowth, the most significant change has been the recent track replacement. At the time I said it was interesting, considering the traffic levels, that NR had used concrete sleepers when, for lines without heavy freight, steel sleepers were normally the order of the day. It was also interesting that every second or third sleeper had ready made holes to support a third rail and I speculated tht Merseyrail were considering extending from Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate! Well the third rail has not appeared yet but regular freight is now running from Knowsley Freight terminal near Kirkby!

Towcester: Sadly, this road over rail bridge is the only relic of the once extensive layout of Towcester station. It took the old Tiffield road over the Olney branch, but is now only a footpath; making the weight limit sign somewhat insulting to pedestrians. Wolverton: There are five arches visible in this view. The first was across the Newport Pagnell branch; the end of that platform can also be seen. The second and third are over the two pairs of tracks on the WCML see image [[36088]], while the fifth is over the Grand Union Canal. Hence, I suspect that the fourth was over the original route of the WCML, before it was diverted around the Works.

Edinburgh Gateway: A service for Waverley calls at Edinburgh Gateway on 10 February 2020. In addition, 700 tonnes of mats are now in place on the roadway. There are temporary traffic lights on the A9 to accommodate the numerous trucks entering the site - the exit is by station road.
