Rainford Junction

142057 for Kirkby entering the single line section west of Rainford Junction station on 10 February. For the scene as it was 30 years previously see image 21273. Apart from the undergrowth, the most significant change has been the recent track replacement. Considering the traffic levels, it is interesting that NR have used concrete sleepers when, for lines without heavy freight, steel sleepers are normally the order of the day. It was also interesting that every second or third sleeper had ready made holes to support a third rail. Perhaps Merseyrail are considering extending from Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate!
