Location type

Tunnel

Name and dates

West Street Tunnel

Opened on the Polloc and Govan Railway.

Description

This double track tunnel runs east from the site of West Street Junction [CR] to near Larkfield Junction. Above it are (from west to east)
- the Gordon Street Lines (Glasgow Central Station (Caledonian Railway))
- Eglinton Street (the road, not station!)
- Pollokshaws Road

The tunnel carries the eastern part of the General Terminus and Glasgow Harbour Railway, which forms a useful bypass of Glasgow Central for goods traffic travelling from east to west (or vice versa) through south central Glasgow. This line is sometimes known as the 'Burma Road'.
