Dalmuir No 23 Tunnels

Location type

Tunnel

Name and dates

Dalmuir No 23 Tunnels (1897-)

Opened on the Clydebank to Dalmuir (North British Railway).

Description

This pair of single track tunnels carry the Clydebank to Dalmuir (North British Railway) line under the Forth and Clyde Canal between Clydebank (to the east) and Dalmuir (to the west).

For the line's construction the Forth and Clyde Canal was deviated slightly to the south, creating two bends in the canal where there had been one before. The original course of the canal was obliterated not long afterwards.

The '23' is due to this being the 23rd structure on the line going west from Hyndland.
