Dalkeith Pits Nos 5 and 9 (1903-1978)

Description

6 surface mines here were began in 1903 by A G Moore and Company. A new unit was created with a central washery by the NCB.

This washery was part of the development Dalkeith Collieries Nos 5, 9 for coal, 6 for access, 7 and 8 for ventilation, 10 was abandoned. Washery actually at No 9. The NCB washery came into use in 1953.

Hardengreen line partly relaid to facilitate access to the washery sidings - access from the south.

To the north double pair of sidings to Dalkeith No 9, silo over east group of sidings.

Coal was received for washing from the nearby Meadowmill Mine, Winton Mine, Limeylands Mine, Oxenford Mine, Castle Mine, Carberry Mine and Tynemount Mine. Waste was dumped on the Dalkeith Colliery Nos 1,2 and 3.

The pits were closed in 1968 and the washery in 1978.
