Birdsfield Siding

Opened on the Glasgow, Bothwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge Railway.

Description

This siding was a short distance west of Blantyre Junction [NBR] and not far east of Auchinraith Junction on the North British Railway's Blantyre branch.

The siding served the Greenfield foundry and Engineering Works. After closure of the Hamilton branch north over the Craighead Viaduct in 1952 a link, put in at Peacock Cross allowed access via a reversal at the former Blantyre Junction [NBR]. After 1963 a new link from Strathaven Junction gave access to the Blantyre branch allowing closure to Peacock Cross. Birdsfield Siding to Strathaven Junction closed in 1980.
