Barochan Junction

Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Barochan Junction (1937-1952)

Opened on the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway.

Description

This junction was north of Georgetown station and south of Southbar Junction. The box at Southbar had burned down in 1934 and the box here replaced it. The box was on the east side of the line. Barochan Junction was named for Barochan House, moss and hill which are off to the west.

The box controlled a loop which ran north from Barrochan Junction to a slightly relocated to the north Southbar Junction where there was a yard before the rejoining the main line. Sidings from the south end of the yard ran to serve the southern part of the ROF Bishopton site. This was the former Great War period Georgetown Filling Factory site which was largely used for storage in the Second World War. Barrochan Junction was close to the site of the former Georgetown [NFF] station, built on a loop on the west side of the main line.

The signal box closed in 1952 around which time the connection to the main line was probably severed or replaced with a ground frame. It was removed by 1967 when the line was electrified.
