Newcastleton

On 13th June 1964 the up Waverley drew to an unscheduled halt just north of Newcastleton. From the photo, the train might almost appear to have been under steam haulage, but the locomotive was in fact Peak D27, on which fire had broken out. Fortunately the train staff were able to stop the fire. One of them can be seen on the track, marching forward with a fire extinguisher.
