Newcastleton

Site of the old level crossing at Newcastleton, looking south in 2007, a scene of peace and tranquility... unlike one cold January night in 1969, when protesters blocked the crossing, resulting in the arrest of the local minister and necessitating the intervention of one David Steel MP, a passenger on the last scheduled train (the Edinburgh - St Pancras Midland Sleeper), as peacemaker and go-between. The minister was eventually released, the crossing cleared, David Steel returned to bed and Peak class locomotive no 60 Lytham St Annes finally got the last train underway, more than a little behind schedule.
