Hawick Shed: All the comforts of home... not! The spartan crew facilities offered by a WD Austerity 2-8-0 stabled alongside Hawick shed in 1958. With the help of a damp cloth the cabside number has been partially revealed as (what appears to be) 90004. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1943, originally as War Department 7033, the locomotive spent the whole of the post-war period based in central Scotland until withdrawn from Thornton Junction at the end of 1963. Even disposal was fairly local, being carried out in the yard of T W Ward, Inverkeithing, in May 1964.

Hawick [2nd]: Name on a splasher. Built at Cowlairs in 1920, no 2424 originally appeared carrying the name Glen Gau. After several queries it was established there was no such glen and the name was assumed to have been the result of a clerical error on the instruction to the works signwriter. It was changed to Glen Gour during a works visit in 1925. Photographed at Hawick in 1958 see image [[30227]].

Halfway Viaduct: Halfway Viaduct on 24th August 2019. Halfway to where you may ask? The village of Halfway is roughly halfway to Bandon from Cork so that may have been where it got its name. The Cork, Bandon & South Coast Railway (originally the Cork and Bandon Railway) was a standard Irish gauge system opened in stages from 1849, reaching Bandon by 1851, a branch to Kinsale (1863), Dunmanway (1866), Dunmanway to Skibbereen (1877), Bantry (1881), a branch to Clonakilty (1886) and Skibbereen to Baltimore (1893). Most of the extensions and branches were originally independent companies but were gradually taken over by the CB&SCR. In 1924 the CB&SCR became part of the Great Southern Railway which in turn became part of CIE in 1945. Closure, in the face of considerable public anger, came on 1st April 1961. There were plans a few years ago to turn much of the route into a Greenway cycle and walkway (there are a number of highly successful such routes on disused Irish lines) but so far these have come to nothing.

Dunardy Boat House [CC]: From 1866 until 1929 passengers arriving at Ardrishaig on one of the Clyde steamers were transported through the Crinan Canal for onward passage north on a steamer called the TSS 'Linnet'. With a capacity of 270 passengers the vessel only operated for four months during the summer. Out of season the 'Linnet' was kept in a boathouse adjacent to Lock 9. The roofless shell remains as a monument to the days when the canal was used for passage of passengers and goods rather than just leisure craft like those seen in Lock 9 behind the building. The 'Linnet' was sold to the Glasgow Motor Boat Racing Club who moored her as a clubhouse at Shandon in the Gareloch where she met a sad end, wrecked in a storm in January 1932. Eastleigh: Freightliner 70014 restarting its train from Platform 3 at Eastleigh following a driver change. This was train 4O14, from Garston FLT to Southampton MCT, on 24th August 2022. To the right a 153 single unit, in Stagecoach livery but debranded, is stabled in the sidings presumably awaiting a visit to the works.

Glengarry Lead Smelter: Nothing grows here. This area of desolation is just east of Tyndrum. There was a crushing mill for the Clifton lead mines here, with a tramway running west to the mines. There are the remains of some timber structures and a chimney(?). When the Tyndrum extension of the C&O opened it crossed the former tramway alignment. The C&O is out of view off to the left and WHR up above out of shot to the right. The view is to the west. The path of the West Highland Way can be seen in bottom left.

Drishaig Junction: A view south overlooking Kilchurn Castle and Drishaig Junction, where the Ben Cruachan Quarry line met the Callander and Oban Railway. The quarry line came in from the bottom centre and met the Oban line centre right.

Drishaig Junction: Looking down the quite steep Ben Cruachan Quarry branch to Drishaig Junction. With views of mountains, Kilchurn Castle and Loch Awe it must have been one of the most attractive quarry lines to work, albeit hard going. The trackbed is now a dirt road.

Östersund Central: ASEA RC4 loco Elektra in overall red livery of Inlandståg in the goods yard at Östersund Central. Most of the wagons behind and around this train of tank wagons are filled with timber from the Jämtland forests. The bridge over the tracks is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge giving access to a new area of the city being developed next to Storsjön just visible to the left of the loco. Perhaps Östersund should be twinned with Inverness as both have a mysterious creature living in the nearby loch-in this case Storsie, a cousin of Nessie?

Ben Cruachan Quarry: This photograph shows the lowest of the Ben Cruachan Quarries. The railway came from Drishaig (the dirt road centre distance) and ran to the bottom left in the first of a series of zig-zags to reach the higher quarries. The first reversing location is out of shot bottom left with the higher section then running from bottom left to the quarry (it is quite hard to see). There was another reversing place at the quarry with the line then following the dirt road from the centre of the view to the bottom centre. Behind me are the remains of further zig-zags.

Bridge of Orchy: An evening view of Bridge of Orchy. There is a northbound Sprinter at the platform but its difficult to see - theres been a lot of tree growth at the station. The West Highland Way is in the view, running from centre bottom to the station, the main road is off to the left and Loch Tulla is in the distance.
