For several years there was a gap on the rail route from Boat of Garten to Broomhill. The original bridge was 3 tracks wide and was replaced by a single track rail bridge when the Strathspey Railway extended to Broomhill in the first years of the 21st Century.

I first saw them in the early 1970s when, along with the EE Class 83s, they were stored in the former steam shed at Bury for several years.

Point of interest - the signal post shows (from top down) Stirling Middles Down Starter Cleared. Stirling Norths Down Distant cleared and Stirling Middles rather rare Calling On signal. The calling on signal is used when the track ahead (at the station platform) is already occupied by a train and a following train is to be allowed to share the same section of track at the platform (and be prepared to stop before running into it). Another surviving Calling On signal is to be found at Girvan.

Partickhill: The opening of the Argyle Line in 1979 brought a new interchange station called Partick, with Partickhill closed the previous day. At least that was the theory, though I believe Partick wasn't ready in time and Partickhill continued to be used for some months. They are not very far apart, as proved by the fact that this photograph was taken from Partick station, but the new station gave easier access to Partick Subway station which is on the same side of Dumbarton Road. The platform buildings of the closed station, complete with namesigns, remained in place for some years after closure and the platforms are there even now. 320312 passes them on 16 June with an Airdrie service. Paisley St James: Paisley St James station was to have been moved under the proposed Glasgow Airport Rail Link.  This has of course been shelved and St James is going nowhere, but it is currently having a makeover big enough for it to be closed for 10 weeks over the summer.  It is difficult to see what is going on, but nothing obvious has changed yet except that while the other signage still has the SPT logo the street-entrance sign has already been replaced, as can be seen here on 16 June.

Blantyre: Strathclyde Red (orange, really) with its stylised map logo was superseded in 1997 by the carmine and cream livery and colour scheme for stations.  In 2008 a unified 'Scotland's Railway' image was introduced which would subsume the SPT one.  While the new livery has not made much headway, repainting of stations to blue and white proceeds apace. Meanwhile there are still pockets of Strathclyde Red signs, mainly on bridges over roads at station.  Blantyre station building though is, I believe, the only one still to have the image before last and is looking defiantly 1980s on 16 June 2010.

Fountainhall: Down among the daisies. Standing in a field at Fountainhall in June 2017 looking south east along the Gala Water. The lattice girder bridge once carried the old road, linking the A7 (off to the left) with the village (beyond the trees) passing over a level crossing in front of the abandoned station house in the background (see [[28512]]). The train is Edinburgh bound, in this case one of the services running non-stop over the 21 miles between Galashiels and Gorebridge. Part of the bridge carrying the new road across the line and into the village is just visible on the far right.

Alnwick: Interior of the former Alnwick station, opened in 1848 and now Barters Bookshop, seen here 50 years after closure on 16th June 2018. The line to Coldstream closed in 1930 but that to Alnmouth along with the fine terminus at Alnwick, closed in 1968. The Aln Valley Railway now operates heritage trains over a short section of the line from a new terminus at Lionheart.

Alnwick: Exterior of the former Alnwick station, opened in 1848 and closed in 1968 and now the well-stocked Barter's Bookshop, on 16th June 2018, 170 years after opening and 50 years after closure. The historic Northumberland market town of Alnwick was bypassed by what is now the ECML and quite why this branch was closed is anyone's guess as it provided a convenient link off the main line. On this visit to Alnwick, by train from our base in Newcastle to Alnmouth, the replacement bus journey from Alnmouth station involved a walk up a steep ramp to the bus stop and the bus itself went on a roundabout route that took a lot longer than the train would have done. Part of the line is now the heritage Aln Valley Railway but unlikely ever to serve this former terminus, having set itself up at new premises at Alnwick (Lionheart).

Rogart: 158707 from Inverness to Wick via Thurso departing from the request stop at Rogart on the evening of Sunday, 16th June 2019. This is where my friend Paul and I alighted (after first alerting the guard) to spend the night in one of the converted railway coaches that are berthed here. Very comfortable it was too, with shower, kitchen and dining area and former compartments converted to bedrooms with bunk beds on one side and the original seats on the other. We had separate rooms, of course, but both of us are a bit too advanced in years now to make it to the top bunks!

This is where Paul and I stayed for one night only before going on to Thurso and Wick the following day and then back to Alness in the evening. I had never stayed in an old railway coach before and it was a most interesting and enjoyable experience that I can thoroughly recommend. This station was one of several on this line that closed on 13th June 1960 but it dawned rather quickly on the powers-that-be that the closures were somewhat more severe than necessary and Rogart was the first to reopen on 6th March 1961.

2007Plans approved for Botanic Gardens StationStefan King, the millionaire leisure entrepreneur, has been given the go-ahead to recreate a historic railway station. Glasgow City Council^s executive committee approved the scheme without any major objections yesterday. However, there are still a number of hurdles to get over before work on the project in the Botanic Gardens, in the city^s west end, begins. Mr King, who heads bar, club and restaurant chain G1 Group, is already working on a detailed planning application. He will also have to convince the city^s licensing board of the merits of the scheme before he is given the go-ahead to sell alcohol. As part of his bid, Mr King has promised a mini-railway, bandstand and pavilion for the city park. He will also construct a conference and performance centre, as well as a nightclub, on a disused subterranean railway platform. The former station site, on the Great Western Road perimeter of the park, will become a family-orientated cafe-bar and restaurant across two floors, based on the original architectural plans for the elegant James Miller design. The station opened in 1894 and closed in 1939
2007The Talla RailwayAn addendum has been added to this Railscot article by way of a link to an old poem covering the 10 years (1895-1905) from the cutting of the first sod to completion and the grand opening of the reservoir. 2013Train travel: why must we endure this? [Telegraph]Last week’s spat between Network Rail and the Office of Rail Regulation was not the pistols-at-dawn confrontation that was portrayed in several newspapers. It was, in fact, the normal negotiation process between the rail company and its regulator that occurs every five years, because the railways’ maintenance and investment programme are set in the rather Soviet-style planning system that resulted from privatisation. Tellingly, Network Rail stayed schtum, knowing that it was actually getting most of the money it needs for its massive investment plans, and that it is not the regulator that threatens to derail the deal, but the Chancellor.
2013Train operators cause more than a third of rail delays [Telegraph]Statistics produced by the industry regulator have shown that 39 per cent of delays were caused by train operators themselves. In all train companies were responsible for 28 per cent of delays to their own services with a further 11 per cent being the fault of other operators.
2016Britain^s biggest rail franchise in chaos [BBC News]^I^m six months pregnant. At least once a week it will take three or four hours just to get home.^ ^Haywards Heath is a prime location for turfing you off the train and leaving you stranded with hundreds of people.^ ^My work is suffering. It has taken me an average of three hours to get home every night last week. It should take an hour and 10 minutes^. With hundreds of cancellations every day, for months, passengers on board Southern trains are at the end of their tether. The company is currently cancelling five times more trains than the operator with the next worst record. Bearing the brunt of the mayhem are people using the line linking London to Brighton, which is already one of the most congested routes in Britain. I have heard about people going part-time or giving up work altogether because the trains are so bad.
2018ScotRail journeys increase by 23.5 million in a decade [ScotRail]The number of people travelling with ScotRail has increased by almost one-third in the past decade, new figures have revealed. The ScotRail Alliance said that the increase in customer journeys highlights the scale of the challenge it faces every day to keep people moving.
