National Railway Museum [York]: Shunter with a story. Built at Horwich in 1961, D4105, spent its first 7 years at Chester before moving to Feltham in 1968. Within 2 years it was transferred to Selhurst, where it was renumbered 09017 during 1973. Withdrawn in August 1987, it reappeared 2 months later as departmental locomotive 97806, allocated to Sudbrook Pumping Station, where it was used on the Severn Tunnel emergency train. By mid 1998 it had reverted to its former number 09017, this time sporting EWS colours. Finally, in 2011, the National Railway Museum obtained 09017 as its resident shunter at York, where it was refurbished and given a new Maroon livery. National Railway Museum York: Diminutive 0-4-0ST Teddy in the yard at the NRM in June 2013. Built in Bristol by Peckett & Sons in 1942 (works no 2012) Teddy is believed to be the smallest working standard gauge steam locomotive in the UK. Originally used by the Royal Ordnance Corps in Poole, Dorset, the locomotive spent much of its life, including the war years, shunting wagons around the very tight yard there. Teddy is now regularly employed on mini tourist steam trips at the NRM.

Scheduled to haul its first excursion on 7th June 2014 (Rawtenstall to Oxford) it was sent to Carnforth the day before to collect the stock and a number of enthusiasts paid to travel back to Bury on a circuitous route behind the gleaming veteran, seen here passing the closed station at Borwick just after leaving Carnforth.

Here a 2-car service accelerates away from the village of Beuron on 6th June 2017. The tower of the local Benedictine monastery, where the photographer stayed for a week (highly recommended for a peaceful holiday), can be glimpsed in the background. Sessay: A short distance north of the former Sessay station, towards Thirsk, there is a very narrow and low bridge, with blind approaches on each side, under the East Coast mainline on a local road heading from the A19 towards Dalton to the west of the line. The bridge ECM 5/37 is seen in a view looking east. The arched centre of the bridge is possibly from when the East Coast Main Line was only twin track, with the flat extension at each side being added when it was four tracked.

Oxford: X-Country Voyager 221140 on a northbound service at Oxford on 6th June 2019. The principle difference between 220s and 221s are the heavy duty tilting bogies on the latter but also nearly all 221s run as five cars and all the 220s as four cars.

Dunblane: An Inverness to Glasgow HST has cleared Dunblane station so the next returning Edinburgh service has entered Platform 1 from the reversing stub. It will wait a few minutes before departing. In the 1980s I once got on a clapped out DMU here which seemed ancient even then. A German tourist said 'In Chermany such a train would be in a museum, I sink'. Gleneagles: It is hard to believe that Gleneagles station has been unstaffed for many years as it always looks so good. Unusually it has run-in boards at right angles to the track, as if for the drivers' benefit rather than the passengers'. View looks south, so those are the Ochils rather than the proper Highlands - and I don't want to get into an argument about where the Highlands start. Highland Spring? From Blackford?

Larbert Junction: An Edinburgh service (obviously) approaches the points at Larbert on 6 June after calling at the station. Simple geography would dictate that Larbert and Larbert North Junctions should be Larbert South and Larbert respectively, but the seemingly randon names of the various Cowlairs junctions demonstrate that common sense doesn't always apply to such names.

Scottish Central Railway

Gleneagles: A ScotRail HST from Inverness pulls into Gleneagles with the 1108 to Glasgow, apparently a regular HST diagram on a line still dominated (for now?) by 170s. There was a plan a while back for regular Glasgow to Perth stopping services but these never came about and Gleneagles has been left behind in the general improvement of services in central Scotland. It may be quite isolated, but the few trains which do call see reasonable custom.

Powderhall Loop: If I hadn't photographed it myself a fortnight previously I might not have believed that the rails here had been lifted in order to dig a hole. The hole is now filled in and the rails replaced. This would be unremarkable, but the line is disused… View looks south towards Leith Walk. The engine release loop is nearest the camera.

Granton Esparto Wharf: A look along the Western Breakwater at Granton. The view is southwest, so inland. Note the solitary remaining rail, the telegraph pole and what I take to be cable supports. The last two presumably serviced the shed which was behind me and right at the end of the breakwater, which was then wider here.

Granton Branch (Caledonian Railway)

Granton Esparto Wharf: View towards the end of the Western Breakwater at Granton showing the remaining rail (yes, just one.) There were in fact four tracks here; the breakwater has obviously been narrowed since the wharf closed with the wharf side gone. If you don't know what esparto is please be assured it's as dull as it sounds.

Newhaven [Tram]: Former tram crews' convenience at the one time Newhaven terminus of the Numbers 7 and 11. The No 7 bus still terminates there today and the facility appears still to be in use. I'm talking about bus drivers' toilets? Maybe there's something missing in my life.
