Alongside are Black 5s 45120 and 45135.

North Leith: One of the NB's 3 termini in Leith this one on Commercial Street closed in 1947. A writer of 1884 regarded this is a shabby building though it may have had claim at some time to be ornamental. There's just no pleasing some people as it looks good enough to me 131 years on though it could maybe do with a full clean. Morecambe Euston Road: Station Road in Morecambe is one of those modern day anomalies where the present day station is nowhere near it. This street led to the LNWR's Morecambe Euston Road, which was sited where the flats and sheltered accommodation have since been built. The open area was once the station forecourt. Lowton: Lowton Junction, at the north end of the Parkside triangle, seen from half way along the curve from Newton-le-Willows Junction in February 2021. Lowton station was just beyond the junction and served both lines before closure in 1949. This chord, the short stretch of L&M to Earlestown and the link back to the WCML from Earlestown were all electrified around 1972 but it was nearly fifty years later that the other sides of the triangle and the Liverpool and Manchester route caught up.

Kenyon Junction: TPE 802211, from Lime Street to Newcastle, is running between Parkside Junction and Kenyon Junction on 8th February 2021. The train is approaching the tunnel like bridge under Kenyon Lane that spans the deep cutting. These bi-mode trains can operate from the overhead wires between Liverpool and Manchester but then it is diesel power over the Pennines.

Slochd Summit: 66304 and 66426 double head the southbound container train from Inverness to Mossend, away from Slochd Summit down towards Slochd Viaduct, on 8th February 2021. 66304 broke down the previous week, hence the double header on this day.

Newton-le-Willows Junction: A view towards Newton-le-Willows Junction (by the M6 bridge), from about half way along the curve from Lowton Junction, on 8th February 2021. The less than shiny rails confirm this curve sees only limited trains, although a single Glasgow to Liverpool TPE EMU runs this way in the 2020 timetable, rather than through St. Helens, and the Seaforth - Mossend container trains also take this route.

Slochd Viaduct: A wintry scene at Slochd Viaduct on 8th February 2021. It is -4C with the snow round half a metre deep. 4D47 container train is hauled south over Slochd Viaduct, double headed by 66304 and 66246.

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal: A mathematical puzzle: If 66004 picks up 4 Cargowaggons from the siding nearest to the Eddie Stobart warehouse, backs them onto the rake in the other siding, pulls a total of 12 wagons out, then deposits 6 in the siding outside the warehouse; then puts the rest of the waggons back in the siding adjacent to the Northampton loop; how many waggons are now in the siding next to the main line?

Parkside [1st]: Despite palisade fences, raised parapets, gantries and vegetation it is still just possible to get some pictures around the Parkside triangle. 802212 is passing the Huskisson Memorial on the last leg of a Newcastle to Liverpool journey on 8th February 2021. Parkside [1st]: 323236 at Parkside with a Manchester Airport to Lime Street service on 8th February 2020. The train is actually passing through the site of the first Parkside station, which was only open from 1830 to 1839 when a replacement opened just beyond the junction to the rear of the train. Parkside [1st] was of course the spot where William Huskisson was fatally injured by 'Rocket' on the opening day of the L&M and his memorial can be seen in the right foreground. It has been pretty inaccessible for the 170 plus years since the station closed.

Kenyon Junction: Kenyon Junction had four platforms and occupied a large site but it closed in 1961 and little remains. This February 2021 view shows part of the station site looking along the curving trackbed of the line from Leigh. The platforms and buildings, which would have been beyond the parked car, have all been cleared. The loop through Leigh to Patricroft finally closed in 1969.

2017Rail firms mull iris scan train fares [BBC News]Technology such as biometric scanning and smarter trains could improve rail travel for customers, a body representing UK rail firms has said. The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has unveiled its plans for the future of rail travel. Travellers could purchase fares after being identified via iris or fingerprint scans to enable faster ticket-free travel, it said. Digital signalling could also enable trains to travel more closely together. This would mean more frequent services could operate. In his last budget Chancellor Philip Hammond committed £450m to trials of digital signalling technology and other railway improvements as part of the Digital Railway project. Chiltern Railways is currently seeking volunteers to trial ticket-free travel via a Bluetooth app.
2017Volunteers to help build new railway station [Cambrian TimesVOLUNTEERS at the Corris Railway Society have launched a funding drive to help build a new station, 50 years after the original line was closed. The Railway was closed in 1948 and subsequently demolished with its two surviving steam locomotives and other stock eventually being purchased by the Talyllyn Railway. Half a century on from the foundation of the society, and after much work by a small but dedicated volunteer workforce, trains are running on selected dates each year between Corris station and Maespoeth Junction. A new steam locomotive has been built, with another under construction, carriage building continues in the carriage shed constructed at Maespoeth Junction and much else has been achieved.
