Sandilands Viaduct: Sandilands Viaduct formerly crossed the River Clyde near Lanark. The massive stone abutments of this bridge still stand. This 2005 view looks south towards Sandilands. George O'Hara described this as 'the impressive bow-string girder Sandilands viaduct' in his 'Scottish Urban and Rural Branch Lines'. The river was crossed by six girders and the intermediary piers have been removed.

The line, which began life as an early waggonway, was originally built to carry coal from the mines on the Fordell Estate to St Davids Harbour on the Firth of Forth. The last coal was shipped from St Davids Harbour in 1946.

Preston: You're on a charge! 46115 'Scots Guardsman' is 'marched' back to Carnforth in disgrace after failing at Preston on 'The Cotton Mill Express' on 30 January 2010. In reality WCRC sent 47760 to tow the train home after it was terminated at Preston on the outward leg of the railtour see image [[27439]]. On the left of the photograph is a film crew who had been filming the historian Dan Cruickshank. It appears that he had been due to travel on the train and cameras had been mounted on the locomotive. Presumably there is a programme coming to our TV screens later this year.

Preston: Ready for the off? - well ...errr ..not exactly. After a spirited run down from Lancaster 46115 was unfortunately declared a failure at Preston due to a brake problem. The Cotton Mill Express was terminated here and Scots Guardsman had a tail lamp placed on its buffer beam to be hauled back to Lancaster and Carnforth See image [[27431]].

Ulverston: The cramped layout at the eastern end of Ulverston station can be seen here, as can a curious short platform at the foot of the disused steps leading to the former goods depot and early passenger terminus See image [[22211]]. Inverkeithing: Dusk at Inverkeithing station on 30 January as 158 726 calls on a returning Fife local.  Hard behind the platform the deep Keithing Burn slips by so quietly that, even in the silence following a departed train, you wouldn't know it was there.

Glen Water Viaduct: A rather distant view of the isolated railway relic that is the blue brick viaduct over the Glen Water in Darvel. As can be seen, modern housing has replaced the railway embankment on both sides of the bridge.

Inverkeithing South Junction: Looking towards Inverkeithing South Junction from the Rosyth Dockyard branch on 30 January 2010. This branch was once busy with goods and workers' trains for the Dockyard, and also served North Queensferry pier (the original terminus) via Naval Base Junction.  It clings on now with very occasional trains destined for Babcock Engineering Services see image [[22278]].

Loudounhill: Looking East towards Loudoun Hill and the site of the viaduct that once crossed the valley off picture to the right. There are still sleeper indents on this section of the old trackbed, which is amazing considering that the track here was lifted around 60 years ago. The bridge piers in the right background are all that's left of the bridge over a minor road, all steelwork was removed for scrap a long time ago.

Inverkeithing Shipbreaking Yard: As can be seen from a passing train the large scrapyard at Inverkeithing harbour is still in business but its rail connection is long gone and a footpath now crosses the severed rails, seen here on 30 January. View is north towards the former connection with the network on the Rosyth Dockyard branch, while behind the camera the track ran through a gate before fanning out within the scrapyard. Inverkeithing: Inverkeithing station in its current form dates from the opening of the Forth Bridge in 1890 when Dalmeny and North Queensferry were also opened.  Happily all three stations retain an original building and in the case of Inverkeithing it's the Up waiting room. In the middle of the room there's what looks like an oversized rectangular pillar which was once the fireplace and chimney though as can be seen the chimney top has long gone.

Ulverston: A Cumbrian Coast service, formed by 156459, leaves Ulverston for Carlisle and passes the disused section of the island platform. Beyond the semaphore is the signal box, which used to control access to the elevated goods yard situated in the old terminus station behind the trees on the right. Ulverston is one of four surviving mechanical signal boxes between Carnforth and Barrow in Furness, the others being Arnside, Grange-over-Sands and Dalton Junction and the semaphores continue all the way round the coast to Carlisle.

Caldwell's Paper Mill: The former rail-served paper mill alongside the Rosyth Dockyard branch at Inverkeithing in January 2010. For generations rail travellers have looked down on this confidently-lettered frontage from high above on Jamestown viaduct. No doubt many of them have mused, like me, that with the benefit of hindsight 1914 was not an ideal time to open a factory. This scene is already history as the mill is currently (August 2010) being demolished after years of disuse.

Galashiels: The fairly uncommon site of a Class 170 on the Borders Railway, with 170411 forming an Edinburgh service at Galashiels on 30 January 2018. Their largely forgotten name 'Turbostar' appears only on the default onboard information screen. Junipers, anyone? Super Sprinters? The names don't stick and ScotRail don't bother with them for newer stock.

Selkirk Junction: It takes faith and imagination to plot the first 100 yards of the Selkirk branch from the junction, a mile or so south of Galashiels station. Suddenly though on the south side of the Gala Water, the embankment of the old branch rears up. This view looks towards the junction. The timbers on the right probably held the ground frame for the gasworks siding.

Markinch: The ghost ticket office at Markinch, abandoned when the interchange building was opened 12 years ago, looks as well as could be expected. Surprisingly nobody has tried to convert this to a coffee shop, though the listed status may have something to do with this. Pity; I could have done the traybakes. Ladybank: An Arbroath to Edinburgh approaches Ladybank station on 30 January 2019. Since the Edinburgh to Dundee services were extended to Arbroath in December the usual fare is a 158 instead of a 170. Who could have predicted the consequences of a shorter train with a longer journey?

Interiors: Along with 'Kindly adjust your dress before leaving' (which I've never quite understood) this message is redolent of the music hall. At time of writing most of ScotRail's HSTs still flush onto the track, something which is (was?) due to end in 2019.

Prospect Place Foot Crossing: Under wraps. New signal which will control the southern approach to Pitlochry station. The fact that it will replace a single semaphore yet has feathers for the down platform suggests to this numpty that the Up platform will become birectional. Intentionally or not this will aid passenger accessibilty when used by Down trains. 30th January 2019.

Pitlochry: 'Lost a carriage?', the station hand asked the conductor of this Inverness to Edinburgh train. 'Two' was the reply so perhaps it was due to be an HST, as my outbound train was. On 30 January 2019 down south was settling into serious snow, but there's nothing but a light dusting here in Highland Perthshire. Boy, was it cold however. Note the yet-to-be commissioned OFF indicator.

Pitlochry: The signal box at Pitlochry is looking a little bit sidelined on 30 January 2019, but it and its semaphores still cling on. Included in the picture is a sample of the quite incredible amount of shiny metalwork appearing on the platforms. This includes the rather obtrusive OFF indicators we apparently can no longer do without.

Ladybank: I don't suppose too many golf clubs have a level crossing between the car park and the course. The line is the single track route between Ladybank Junction and Hilton Junction, with one train an hour each way. Ladybank Golf Club hosts the final qualifying when the Open is held at St Andrews, as if I cared. I do care though about the nice period bit of street furniture.

Woolwich Arsenal: Sign outside the future Woolwich Arsenal Crossrail station on 30th January 2020. The line should have opened in December 2018 but there is still no real sign of when it will actually start running. After the 2018 date was passed, it was going to be autumn 2019 and now its not expected to open until sometime in 2021 - but don't hold your breath.

Cogie Hill: The extended former crossing keeper's cottage at Cogie Hill, looking towards Garstang, in January 2020. Trains crossed the road at an oblique angle so crossing gate posts were set well back. A wooden one survives on the far right of the picture. The concrete gate post that can be seen between the two cars features in See image [[60670]] when the line was still open. The halt, such as it was, was just behind the camera to the left. Like that nearby at Cockerham Cross this was a request stop only on certain days of the week. The term 'hill' in these parts refers to any slight pimple that rises above the flat marshy ground.

Cockerham Cross: There was never much infrastructure at Cockerham Cross, just a low sleeper platform that would have been on the right on this side of the crossing. This halt was between Garstang and Pilling, and was 'Stops by request on Thursdays and Saturdays only'. The trackbed has disappeared but four level crossing gate posts (and one gate) survive at various angles each side of the lane. Two of the posts can be seen in this view, looking west towards Pilling, on 30th January 2020.

2017How to ride the last remaining sleeper trains [Telegraph]Is there a rail traveller alive who doesnt love the romance of a night train? The survey found overall satisfaction fell from 90% last spring - which had been a record high for ScotRail - to 85% in the autumn. The figure remained higher than the 81% average across the UK. This is largely because falling passenger numbers meant that income from fares fell 2.4% compared to the previous year. However governments still received £0.4bn net from train operators.
