Name and dates

Woodend Colliery Pit No 5 (1870-1979)

Served by the New Monkland Line (Monkland Railways).

Description

This colliery was opened around 1870 by the Coltness Iron Company. It was north west of Armadale, West Lothian. The site for which it is principally known was Pit No 5.

The mine was equipped with a Baum washery, which was retained after closure in 1965 to process coal from nearby mines.

The colliery was located at the end of a single track branch from Woodend Junction a junction and marshalling yard on the Airdrie-Bathgate line. On its course the branch also served Blackrigg Colliery and Woodend Colliery pits nos 2 and 4.

The branch closed in 1979. The washery still stood in the 2000s. It no longer stands.
