Usan Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

Usan Signal Box (1906-2010)

Opened on the North British, Arbroath and Montrose Railway.

Description

This signal box controlled the point where the double track line became single track on the approach to Montrose from the south. This is needed as the Rossie Viaduct and South Esk Viaduct are both single track. Once north of these the line reverts to double track.

The point of change from double to single line was been moved south of an over bridge north of the signal box.

The box closed in 2010 and this is still the location where the line drops to a single track going north.

Before doubling to the south in 1932 this was a passing loop which opened in 1906.
