Description

Muirkirk East signal box was to the east of Muirkirk [1st] station and on the south side of the line opposite the junction for the Muirkirk Iron Works. It was on the eas side of Furnace Road.

Muirkirk [1st] was replaced with Muirkirk [2nd] in 1896, the station moving from west of Furnace Road (and the iron works junction) to east of the road (and junction). It is likely that this is when the box was replaced with the new east box. This was on the north side of the line and west end of the station, set to the back of the platform.

The box was renamed Muirkirk No 2. To the west it controlled access to Kaimes Colliery - the relocation of the station allowed the connection for the colliery to be moved east to connect to the iron works sidings.

Passenger services from the west ceased in 1951 and from the east in 1964. The line east closed in 1964. The box closed in 1966 and was replaced with a ground frame.

Traffic ceased to Muirkirk in 1969.

The site of Muirkirk [2nd] station, and the no 2 box, is now a house.
