Loco shed

Name and dates

Helmsdale Shed (1871-1960)

Where: Highland, Scotland
Opened on the Duke of Sutherland's Railway.
Opened on the Sutherland and Caithness Railway.

Description

This two road shed was located just north of Helmsdale station to the west side of the line. Its turntable was to the west alongside the approach lines. A pair of short sidings were a little further north alongside the turntable line.

Dornoch branch locomotives were serviced here.

The shed building was timber and braced at the sides with side bracing supports (as seen in Scandinavia). It was blown down in 1921 and replaced with a new timber building with a curved roof. Both buildings were large, almost out of scale when compared with the nearby station.

British Railways assigned the code 60C and Dornoch Shed and Tain Shed were sub sheds.

The shed has been demolished, but the turntable pit remains.
