Galashiels North Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

Galashiels North Signal Box (1849-1937)

Opened on the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway (North British Railway).

Description

This signal box was located at the north end of Galashiels [1st] station and was closed during the re-signalling of 1937 when it was replaced by a new box at the north end of the station.

The brick built box was located on the north side of the line, across the line from the east end of the present Galashiels station platform. It was topped with a finial.

The box originally controlled not only the north end of the station (and carriage sidings) but also the level crossing which crossed the line to the north west of the station platforms. This level crossing was replaced by a girder bridge which crossed over the station at 90 degrees directly north west of the station trainshed. That bridge was in turn replaced by a girder bridge on an oblique (which improved the road layout) also passing over the station and through the site of the former trainshed.
