Coltness Cement Works (1909-2000)

Description

This cement works was associated with the Coltness Iron Works. A secondary material for the production of concrete is slag. The cement works was in the southern part of the iron works site.

The works produced concrete railway sleepers and was served by the branch from Stirling Road Junction which also served the iron works.

The plant survived the closure of the iron works and expanded, new buildings being added to the west. It was known as Costain Concrete and the sleepers produced, a common sight, were marked 'Costain'. It came to be owned by Tarmac. The works closed around 2000 and was demolished in 2004.

The site is presently (2018) vacant.
