Burnton Viaduct (1856-)

Opened on the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway.

Description

This is an impressive viaduct. It is a single track, sixteen arch viaduct crossing over the Purclewan Burn (or, more particularly, the low land on either side).

The overall length is 738 ft, height 80 ft and has arches of 40 ft.

Potterston Junction was to the immediate south east and Dalrymple Junction is to the north west.

The line closed to passengers in 1964. Since then it has carried coal traffic, flows starting and stopping. At present (2019) the line carries no traffic.

The engineer was John Miller.
