Bishopton No 2 Tunnel (1841-)

Opened on the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway.

Description

This double track tunnel is west of Bishopton and Bishopton No 1 Tunnel. It is 350yds long.

Construction of the Bishopton Cutting and two tunnels was slow and difficult due to whinstone rock. The cutting is 2,300 yard long and required blasting.

The two tunnels together are referred to as Bishopton Tunnel - 770 yds long.

About 333 yards west of the tunnel is a class 'AM' listed cast iron aqueduct, Bishopton Aqueduct, which carries a small burn over the railway. Engineer William MacKenzie.
