Wigan North Western: Sunset on the Class 319s. It seems that Northern intend to withdraw the Class 319 EMUs with the new timetable on 10th December 2023. 319369 was employed on stopping services between Wigan North Western and Lime Street on 29th November 2023. It is pictured on Platform 6 as 390103 pulled into Platform 5 with a Euston to Glasgow Central service.

Kelty: View south from what would have been the southern end of the island platform at Kelty. The electrical substation building is left over from the Aitken Colliery, with the area being entirely landscaped nothing else remains. Curving off hard to the right was the secondary minerals route to Townhill.

Hooton: Merseyrail Stadler EMU 777003 arrives at Hooton from Ellesmere Port to form the 17.19 departure to Liverpool Central, that I travelled on to Lime Street. This was the only 777 I rode on despite travelling on all the Wirral lines bar the Ellesmere branch that day, and was only because I alighted from the 16.55 ex Chester service to take the following Hooton departure and keep fingers crossed. Other 777s were in operation on services passing through Hooton as noted on the southbound working to Chester.

Niddrie North Junction: 47813 on the rear of the 'Polar Express' test run, on its way to see Santa in Gorgie, passing Niddrie North Junction on 29 November 2023. To the left is the line to Millerhill and Tweedbank.

Rothley: The varnishing railway (repeat pun - see image [[47570]]). The interior of the NER 'Electric Autocar' No.3170 looks very traditional, despite the LED light bulbs. The curved support bows are a work of art. On 18th November 2023 it was in service at the GCR Gala and very popular.

Quorn and Woodhouse: When Iris eyes are smiling: this Derby lightweight single car was used as an inspection saloon after withdrawal from public service; then went to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway; who loaned it to the GCR for their last gala of 2023. It shuttled between Quorn, Rothley and Nunckley Hill stations all day.

Kelty: View north at the site of Kelty station in 2023 from the location of the former island platform. The station, never convenient for the village, closed to passengers in 1930. The tram route, actually entering Kelty, was extended from Cowdenbeath in 1910. The railway closed to passengers and as a through route in 1970, before being cut back to Kelty from the north later that year. Kelty Coup (tip) survived until 1972. Today northing remains here of the station, just a field, other than 'Station Road' and a railway cottage.

Bury South Junction: Bury South signal box looking south in the early 1970s. Bury Bolton Street station is behind the photographer with the Manchester line going straight ahead and a pair of Manchester and Bury Class 504 EMUs stabled on the right. The track swinging off to the left was a connection to Bury Knowsley Street which was on the line between Bolton and Castleton. This line was in a cutting which ran between the rear of the wagons and the terrace of houses in the background.
