Motherwell MPD: 37056 and 37155 on shed at Motherwell depot. To me, from Essex, these were rare locos at the time. No doubt those who were local to Motherwell would be sick of seeing them! Unlike many depots the Motherwell 37s did not wander south that much. One had to travel to see them.
Crook of Devon: The land south of Crook Mill, in Crook of Devon, was called Lam(b)laires and it was here that the station opened in 1863. In 1662, on roughly the site of the station, particularly gruesome events took place following witch trials. Many were accused in the area. Those found guilty were taken 'to the place called the Lamlaires bewest the Cruick Miln' to be 'stranglit to the death by the hand of the hangman, and thereafter their bodies to be burnt to ashes'. This memorial is just to the south of the former station site. It memorialises Agnes Brugh, Janet Brugh, Christian Garvie, Bessie Henderson, Margaret Lister, Agnes Murie, Bessie Neil, Janet Paton (senior), Janet Paton (junior), Isabel Rutherford and Robert Wilson. OS maps show a cross marker just north of the former goods yard.
Hornchurch: View from LU S7 stock calling at Hornchurch station, Essex, two stops into its long District Line journey from Upminster to Ealing Broadway, at 13.59 on Tuesday, 24th October 2023. Behind the fence are the disused ex-LTSR platforms that were abandoned in 1962 when the Southend line was electrified, as were those at Dagenham East and Becontree, allowing these trains to run fast between Upminster and Barking while handing over all the local traffic between the two to London Transport. The eastbound Southend line platform was an island with the westbound District Line.
Bunchrew: Network Rail are investing £1.2m in the Bunchrew level crossing on the Far North Line, with work beginning on Sunday 12 November. The crossing will be made safer and more robust with Network Rail replacing the current equipment before it reaches the end of its working life.
Plains: In this photograph, believed to date from 1968, a Swindon DMU is heading east along the Bathgate line from Airdrie, about to pass the level crossing at the closed Plains station. The photographer did not record the reason for this unusual occurrence but, as he took several shots that day of Swindon units in the Airdrie area, the train was almost certainly a diverted Edinburgh service running from Glasgow Queen St Low Level because of a problem on the normal route via Falkirk High.
Southampton Docks Sidings: USA 0-6-0T No. 30069 is at work in Southampton Docks on 11 June 1963. These locos operated in the Docks for many years before being replaced by Ruston Hornsby Class 07 diesel electric shunters about this time.
Chester: Light and shade at Chester in October 2023. TfW 197044 has just arrived from Cardiff, reversed in the station, and is now heading for Holyhead.
Bournemouth West: A platform end view at Bournemouth West, station for the Somerset and Dorset route trains, in 1962
Inverkeithing North Junction: Looking down to Inverkeithing North Junction and the yard in February 2006. An unidentified Hunterston - Longannet working is heading to Townhill to run round and proceed to the Power Station and in the yard 6G08 has finished loading and is awaiting departure time with the 15.55 Inverkeithing - Drax PS.
Crook of Devon: Wall of unknown provenance on the east side of the Peat Gate level crossing, which was directly east of Crook of Devon station. This location appears in this photograph [[32727]] in which there appears to be no wall. Possibly it was built using stones from the former station platform. Both this view and the 1964 equivalent look east towards Kinross.
Bridge-end [Letham Moss]: The operating base of Letham Moss peat works with a dismantled 4wDM loco, a Ruston Hornsby judging by the cab roof profile. Seen in the late 1990s.
Markham Colliery Sidings: 58017 is piloting failed 20019 20023 on a dull 9 3 1991 with a train for Bolsover Coalite. The location is about midway between Seymour Junction (in the distance) and Markham Mine (behind the camera). The line passed under the M1 here and all that remains today is the bridge which carried the motorway over the railway.
